Friday reflections
A few anecdotes as we approach the weekend. I attended a meeting this week and had a conversation with individuals working in the employment services sector in York Region and heard about the volume of people looking for work as a result of the recession. There is a lot of stress out there as people who have not faced the prospect of looking for work adapt to their new reality. Organizations that provide supports to these individuals are also under a lot of pressure.
The recently opened 60 bed family shelter operated by Blue Door Shelters is full.
As of the end of September, the number of eligible households on the rent geared to income waiting list for social housing had increased 13.3% since September 2008 at 6472. The Ontario Works caseload now stands at 5600 - an increase of 23.3% since November 2008.

A Question
I bet if you asked some of your colleagues or agencies that you regularly work with about how their organization is experiencing the recession you would get some interesting answers. Maybe if you had a poll, it would tell a story that would help non profits understand that we are in this boat together and collaboration is a way we can effectively respond to these pressures.
