Meeting the needs of homeless women in York Region
Last night in Richmond Hill there was a community meeting that brought together representatives from faith communities in Richmond Hill and Markham, individuals wanting to learn more about the issue of homeless women in York Region and members of the Community Team who are working to ensure that we have emergency shelter and other support services for single women. As a member of the Community Team, I was part of a panel telling the story of how we got to this point; the 4 year journey to raise awareness about the crisis facing vulnerable single women across York Region. I have spoken often about this issue, through personal conversations, at workshops, deputations. When I hear the facts, and we tell the story one more time, it never ceases to move me. We are making some good progress. We are delighted that Belinda Stronach is Honorary Chair of the Community Team which has an increasing number of community leaders behind this initiative - but we still need to build more community support . If you are interested in learning more about why this is even an issue in our communities - go to our Women's Shelter Initiative page or Blue Door Shelters Web Site for more information.
