I just found out about a production by students at Bur Oak Secondary School in Markham focused on the issues that can lead to young people being driven to the streets. The pilot drama unit is an initiative linked to new curriculum materials that are now available for teachers on www.homelesshub.ca. Education is key if we are to bust stereotypes and understand root causes. Read the article from the Toronto Star.

Excellent Example of Creativity

Hi Kim,

What a great example of engaging youth in creative activities that address major social issues such as youth poverty and homelessness. I'm definitely going to learn more about this curriculum at Burr Oaks and share it with my network.

A Key Leadership Role

"Our recent project working on the transportation needs of the homeless is just one example of the leadership role the York Region Alliance to End Homelessness has taken. They were able to co-ordinate and facilitate the needs assessments, and focus groups. As one agency this is something we would be hard pressed to find the time to do, but participating and giving information to one central organization made it all work."
