Vaughan Council Considering Basement Apartment Task Force

The Vaughan Council Is considering a task force to look at the issue of basement apartments – currently illegal in the municipality and unregulated.

A deputation was recently made by Rev. Jim Keenan from New Hope United Church appealing to Vaughan councilors to take the necessary steps to legalize basement apartments to ensure safety of tenants. 3400 households are currently on the waiting list for rent geared to income housing in Vaughan.

York Region’s Draft Official Plan (going to Regional Council in November 2009) includes a clause requiring “as of right” secondary suite policies, on a municipal wide basis, in local official plans and zoning by-laws. Currently only two municipalities in York Region – Newmarket and East Gwillimbury, have secondary suites “as of right”.
